New England Skills Challenge – Massachusetts

The next test is Massachusetts! Massachusetts Skills Challenge

I have also included today’s Todd Talk which is all about “ALWAYS DO 1 MORE.” Whether you are a fan of Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United or not, this concept is a very important one that I want to highlight today. Even at the U10 level, when I ask them to do a certain number of repetition of a skill challenge, all of these players know that I always expect “1 MORE.” In fact, many of our U10 players go even a few steps more, which is what I love seeing!

I was lucky enough to have my dad as a coach growing up. He understood people and kids so well and I would say he was a master coach. There were so many little lessons I learned from him. An important one was that my dad always demanded that I be “at least one minute early and always stay at least one minute after practice (or school/work).” These little details matter and gets to another lesson I am always trying to teach kids which is the answer to the question, “What’s the difference between GOOD & GREAT?” The answer is just a few inches or a fraction of a second. Find a way to do “a little bit extra” today that will help you take a few more steps forward towards greatness.

If you are looking for a great movie/documentary to watch, I highly recommend IN SEARCH OF GREATNESS. Here is a short part of this documentary with Wayne Gretsky also known as The Great One. Whether you like hockey or not, listen to what he talks about in this video which gets to the importance of doing that extra work so that you are prepared. Again, you will hear him talk about how important it is for young kids to develop good habits, and I particularly like his reference to school work – “Who are the kids that are most nervous about a test in school? The kids that didn’t study enough!”

Do your work today and enjoy it!

Thanks, Coach Todd
