New England Skills Challenge – Connecticut

The last installment of the New England Skills Challenge… and we have Connecticut. Make sure you get your 2,000 touches in today.

Connecticut Skills Challenge

I am curious to hear from players who were able to accomplish our goal to get at least 12,000 touches this week. If you are one of those players, I want to know who you are. If you are not one of those players, please ask yourself “why.”

This is what I usually hear, “But I don’t have enough time.” Let’s break this all down here:

·        How many hours in a week? There are 168 hours in a week, which is seven days a week with 24 hours a day – What does the average person do with all these hours…?

·        Assuming you are able to get 8 hours of sleep every night, you spend 56 hours sleeping every week.

·        Assuming you are in “school” for 8 hours a day, you spend 40 hours a week “working.” As we all know, our school day during this time is less, but let’s just assume we are working in “normal times.”

·        It is estimated that the average person spends 35 hours a week eating, showering, getting dressed, traveling, etc.

·        This means that out of the 168 hours in every week, there are 131 hours where you are “busy” with 37 hours left over to do whatever you choose to do.

What are you doing in those 37 hours a week? I know I drive kids crazy with my constant preaching about spending too much time wasting it away by watching TV, playing video games, texting or on some sort of social media. My hope is that our kids will start spending more time doing something more productive like pursuing their dream or doing things that they are passionate about.

Do you realize recent research has shown that for the first time in history, today’s generation of children is the first ever to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents…? Yes, that is right. The question you may have is WHY. The answer is inactivity. Kids are too idle. They spend too much time on screens instead of running and playing outside. They are spending too much time sitting instead of playing and being active. Please watch this video (courtesy of The Changing the Game Project).

I know most of our Far Post kids are active, athletic, playful & motivated. I also know how screens and other distractions suck time away from them. Kids, please listen – What you choose to do in your free time shapes who you will become later on in your life! Make wise choices, please, particularly now during these times when we have even more free time.

Thanks, Coach Todd
